How to carry out this lesson at home:

Task 1: MEASURING INSTRUMENTS / APPARATUS

Use a pencil to draw a 15cm line on a paper. DO NOT USE A RULER. Now use a ruler to measure this line. How long is your line?

MEASURING INSTRUMENTS are very important in our everyday life. We need to measure length, mass, time, temperature and so on.
Download Resource 1 – MEASURING INSTRUMENTS. This shows a number of measuring instruments used in science. You will learn to use them during our science course especially if you have the opportunity to do experiments in the school laboratory. But in the meantime you can use some measuring instruments at home….think about a ruler, balance, thermometer and a measuring cylinder /jug. Find some time to use these instruments. If necessary ask for some adult guidance.

Task 2:  USING MEASURING INSTRUMENTS – READING THE SCALES

Each measuring instrument has a measuring scale…that is a series of lines and numbers. You will need to learn how to read the scale. Some measuring instruments are digital and gives you the reading automatically on the screen.
Download Resource 2 – USING MEASURING INSTRUMENTS and learn how to read the scale of a measuring instrument.

Task 3: SIMPLE TASKS

Download Resource 3 – SIMPLE PRACTICAL TASKS. Choose the appropriate science apparatus for these simple experimental tasks. Then try out these simple tasks. If you are doing these tasks at home you will need to use other things such as a teaspoon instead of a spatula, a measuring jug instead of measuring cylinder and so on. If necessary ask for some adult help.

Task 4: MORE ABOUT SCIENCE APPARATUS

You may be interested to learn more about science apparatus. Use the internet or other science books to explore the history of the development of some measuring instruments or learn about other measuring instruments.
