Students are reminded of the beauty of having a pet but the responsibilities this brings with it. Also, students are to become more aware of the animals in their lives (or on the screen) and the importance of animals for people too.
As a follow up to what is done in Years 3-5, students tackle the issue of being a responsible pet owner, now looking at the wider picture, touching also upon animal abuse and what one can do in such instances.
Students are introduced to the concept that certain animals can be kept s pets but this brings with it certain responsibilities
The lesson is a revision of the sustainable goals done in Years 3-6, only now tackled in more depth as students are more mature and have greater awareness of ecological issues.
The students are introduced to the first two global goals, these being hunger and poverty. They will compare their lives to those of others and also the importance of solving this isues and that they too may be able to play a part.
The lesson will introduce students to the 3rd and 4th Global Goals, these being “Good Health” and “Quality Education”. Students will reflect on these two goals and learn how important they are for them, both in the present and also for the future.
The lesson will highlight the Global Goal number 5 “Gender Equality”, including the meaning of equality, gender, stereotypes, the media and future occupations. Global Goal number 8 “Good Jobs and Economic Growth” is also touched upon indirectly, towards the end of the lesson.
The lesson will tackle two Global Goals, Goal 6 regarding clean water and sanitation and also Goal 7 regarding renewable energy. Lesson will help students understand the importance of water in their lives and that this is also a limited resource that should not be wasted. This leads on to the natural resources available, some of which will one day end. As a result, the use of renewable energy sources needs to increase and students too have a role to play in taking care of the Earth.
The lesson will tackle the habit of smoking, which can easily lead to addiction. Apart from information about cigarettes students will also be given information about e-cigarettes. Assertiveness, the issues related to second hand smoke and choices we make are all tackled through handouts, clips and ongoing discussion and written work, including drawing.
The students will be introduced to World No Tobacco Day and will have to find creative ways of celebrating this day’s symbol, the ashtray with flowers. The students will also reflect on how to have a healthy living lifestyle and on the emotions created when one finds oneself near people who smoke. Students will reflect on the reasons why individuals start smoking, are given information about what cigarettes are made up of, risks of smoking and how to be assertive and say no.
Students will reflect on the scholastic year that has come to an end, with its positive and negative memories. Emphasise is placed on safety at home and at the beach and a reflection on how to spend one’s free time wisely.
Friendship and the importance of feeling loved is covered in the first of three parts of Growing Up Together. Students will also reflect on how much they have already changed since birth and that these changes bring about changing emotions. The importance of accepting ourselves as we are is also raised, through poetry.
The students will continue with the topic of Sexuality and Relationships Education, using either their personal copy of the Year 5 workbook or else downloading the soft copy pages 10-15 in either Maltese or English from the resources section of this lesson. Students will learn about food and sports necessary for healthy living, stereotypes, what makes males and female similar and different and about different situations in their lives.
The students will reflect on the life cycle of certain creatures and that humans too grow up and will change by time. Students will also reflect on how much they have changed since birth. Pregnancy in humans is also highlighted, as are some basic keywords, as indicated on page 21 of the workbook. Students are also reminded about Helpline 179.

Students will reflect on the fact that as they grew they started to be allowed to do more things on their own. Physical development and its link to healthy food is also tackled, as is an awareness that as one grows older one will change even further.
During this lesson students will reflect on old age and that being old needn’t be a negative experience. They will also be introduced to the fact that flowers, plants and trees grow out of seeds, that there are male and female animals, that certain animals come out of an egg and to the frog life cycle.
The lesson will introduce the students to the lifecycle of a butterfly, to development issues, the qualities our friends and we should have and to the fact that being different should not mean not being accepted or loved.
In the first lesson of the topic Sexuality and Relationships Education, students will go through pages 1 to 9 of the Year 6 PSCD SRE workbook and discuss issues such as feeling loved, the family, emotions, physical development and puberty.
In today’s lesson students will cover topics such as wearing appropriate clothes according to the occasion or situation, stereotypes, sexual attractions, diversity and one’s food choices as part of a healthy lifestyle.
Students will cover pages 16-24 of the Sexuality and Relationships Education PSCD Workbook for Year 6 during this lesson. Issues to be covered include pregnancy, the development of the embryo, taking care of babies, dangerous situations, physical development issues and Helpline 179.
The lesson will introduce students to the importance of good use of medicines in our lives. The role of doctors/nurses is also highlighted, as is the fact that misuse of medicines is very dangerous.
Students are to become aware that there are various types of medicine, including antibiotics, which, if misused, will not be effective when one really needs them. The importance of exercise in one’s life is also highlighted, as is the fact that there are dangerous substances all around us.
Students will learn about the importance of taking medicine only when necessary, especially antibiotics, that medicine can come in different forms and that prevention is better than cure, so leading a healthy lifestyle is so important.
This lesson will help students to reflect on the dangers of using medicine wrongly. The use and misuse of antibiotics as well as how one can prevent needing to take medicine are also brought up.
As part of a healthy lifestyle students are to learn on the importance of how to brush one’s teeth well and how to do so.
Students will revise what they have learnt in year 3, learn about the importance of dental hygiene and reflect on how they can take care of their own teeth.
