What should you expect from this lesson?

During this learning time, participants will be invited to identify the use of flags and correlate flags to their respective countries. Each of which has its people, habitat, culture, belief, traditions and needs. While participants will be asked to focus on one country, they will also become aware that every country with its characteristics is valuable in forming part of one globalized world-planet Earth.

How to carry out this lesson at home:

Resources needed for this lesson together with the other resources provided as pdfs in this page:

  • Printout of the flags template or blank paper
  • Colours or any other painting materials
  • Biros or pencils
  • String and staples
  1. Start by taking the time to watch this video.
The Why and How of Flags.
  2. Take some time to think about the notion that ‘all countries all over the world wanted to use flags as representations of their nations.’
  3. Although we are speaking about different countries and different flags, at the same time we are speaking about One World in which all these countries with their flags connect.
  4. All countries are connected and their people share their cultures, beliefs, traditions and ways of life.
Can you think of ways how countries share their cultures, beliefs, traditions and ways of life?
  5. Can you choose one country which is dear to you or which struck your attention lately?
It could be the country you heard about in the news or the country where some of your family and friends live.
  6. Now, with the help of an adult printout and cut around the flag template provided as a pdf.
  7. On the flag-template draw the flag of the country which you chose in step 5.
  8. Think about the needs of this country and its people. With the help of an adult, you can also do some research about this country.
  9. After watching this video: Where Are You From, on the other side of your template you can write a prayer for this country and its needs.
Each country has different needs but in your prayer, you can pray for the people of the country you chose in step 5. You can also pray for its leaders and for the protection of its natural habitat.
Example: Dear God I want to thank you for all the flags of the world because they remind us of one big world which we share. I ask you to protect and provide for the people of________________.
  10. Finally, with the help of an adult hang a piece of string somewhere visible to you and staple your flag with it. This will remind you and those around you to pray for all the rest of the countries in the world. You can repeat this prayer space and each time, you can add a flag so as to form a Planet Earth streamer of flags and prayers.

The video link ‘Bnadar ta’ Talb’ can guide you along with these steps.
