How to carry out this lesson at home:

Resources required:
Thick cardboard, containers, wood, water, soil, sand, plastic animals, plants.

Description of investigation:
1. Watch the video by pressing the link on this page to learn about how Sudan families are finding ingenious solutions to overcome climate change and turn the desert green.
2. Now you are going to design your model of greening the desert. Think of ways how water can be collected and stored. Think how the flow of water can be turned on and off.
3. Your model needs to  be able to water at least 6 plants at the same time.
4. Your watering facility/model must be at least 30cm away from your first plant.
5. Research, plan and design your model!

More info:
Desert greening is the process of man-made reclamation of deserts for ecological reasons (biodiversity), farming and forestry, but also for reclamation of natural water systems and other ecological systems that support life.

Investigation Questions:
Is it possible to bring water to a desert?
Is it possible to grow fruit and vegetables in the desert?
How are we going to succeed in such a task?

Skills Acquired:
Think Critically – ask questions and find out answers.
Collaborate with family members.
Get Creative! Building a model, coming up with solutions.
Communicate your findings with others.

Suggested Links to Other Subject Areas:
Language:
Interpreting instructions and sharing information with others.
Conducting online research.
Creative Arts:
Creating a model to display how re-greening the desert is really possible and cost effective.
Design and technology:
Conducting research, planning and designing the watering facility/model.
